U.S. 36 Drivers Welcome The End Of Overnight Closures -- For Now

DENVER (CBS4) - The overnight closures of U.S. Highway 36 between Church Ranch Road and Wadsworth Parkway have wrapped up -- for now.

It's been a hassle for drivers, but the full overnight closures of U.S. 36 have been helpful to crews.

"We are nearly 80-some percent done of Phase 1 of the U.S. 36 project," Amy Ford with the Colorado Department of Transportation said.

Phase 1 adds an additional express lane both directions along the Boulder Turnpike from Federal Boulevard out to 88th Street. CDOT expects those lanes to open later this summer.

Phase 2, which takes drivers into Boulder, is only about 40 percent done. Those lanes won't open until early next year.

With the completion of Phase 1 coming this summer, CDOT is asking the public to start thinking now about how to be using the new express lanes going forward.

"It's all about choice. The beauty about adding one express lane in either direction is that it allows you to choose if you want to travel in that lane for a fee, or you can travel for free in the general purpose lanes," Ford said. "You could choose to ride the new bus rapid transit system, or you could choose to carpool."

And in order to utilize all options at the cheapest rate, CDOT suggests getting an express pass.

Two separate closures of U.S. 36 are scheduled for April. Crews will be doing support work on the Flatiron bridge. The closures will take place near the Interlocken loop .
