Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said officers were already at the apartment complex responding to the loud party in one of the upstairs units. It's not clear if the shooting, which occurred in the parking lot, was related to the party.

"While they were upstairs a shooting took place where two male parties were shot. One was transported to the hospital, the other one was pronounced dead right here at the scene," Jackson said.

Resident Jenna Lampro went outside to walk her dog shortly after midnight Sunday when shots rang out.

"A couple of kids walked by from the party and said, 'Don't go over there, there's guns, it's going to get scary.' And then in that same second we just heard about 15 gunshots, dropped down, and panicked and ran back to the building," Lampro said.

"Disbelief is really what I would say. I mean normally this is a pretty quiet apartment complex, so I was quite surprised to hear that. I guess it's a little bit scary," resident Phillip Nickerson said.
