Judge Mentions Accused Principal Being Found In Hotel Room With Pills & Handgun

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) - An elementary school principal in Jefferson County who faces charges of sexual assault on a child remains behind bars and has been put on leave from the school.

Court documents have been sealed but the judge on Wednesday said the alleged sexual assault continued for a period of time until the victim was in fourth or fifth grade. He also made some mention of an incident involving Steven Weigum, 55, being found in a hotel room with pills and a handgun before first responders had to pump his stomach.

That information was reportedly included in the affidavit, although the connection to the alleged assault is not exactly clear.

Deputies say the victim was a close relative of the suspect. They say it doesn't appear that any students have been victimized.

"If we feel like there's any other thing that develops that would lead us to believe there was more to this than this one victim, then we would certainly reach out to the school district and parents," Mark Techmeyer with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office told CBS4.

Ute Meadows Elementary School parents still showed up at court on Wednesday concerned about the accusations.

"I was pretty sick at first, and when I chatted with my wife it was one of those things that just; you can't really be prepared to hear that," parent Russell Carter said. "It was hard. The kids had heard some things and they had some questions. At the time the news stations had put out a bunch of information, so that's what we had to go on."
