I-25 Tolls On The Rise, Commuters Frustrated Over Boulder Turnpike

DENVER (CBS4) - Prices for the Interstate 25 toll lanes are going up after the Colorado Department of Transportation approved increases.

The increases approved at the public meeting held by CDOT on Tuesday range from an additional 10 to 30 cents per car. They will go into effect on March 16.

Plenary Roads Denver says there were a lot of considerations when determining rate increases. Some of which include maintaining roads and travel times for buses that use the route, and keeping congestion low in those lanes.

Next the agency has to decide how much drivers will have to pay to use the express lanes being built on the Boulder Turnpike. CDOT is waiting for more public input on the proposal for U.S. 36 toll rates.

The rate for using the toll lane on U.S. 36 from West 88th Avenue to Pecos Street at the height of morning and evening rush could be more than $13 each way for drivers who do not have express toll passes.

Some people at the open meeting showed frustration. One driver said he's concerned about the toll increases because roads don't seem to be improving.

"The biggest thing that I see the problem with is that the rates keep going up and road keeps deteriorating," one commuter said. "If this is part of the contract that these fees are supposed to take care of; the maintenance on the road is not happening.

"For me paying $5 a time to just drive on the road and bounce down it like it's piece of country road is really frustrating."

CDOT has another one to three months to talk to the public about the Boulder Turnpike proposal.
