Highway 550 On Red Mountain Pass Reopens After Avalanche Mitigation
OURAY, Colo. (CBS4) - The Colorado Department of Transportation has reopened Highway 550 on Red Mountain Pass after conducting avalanche mitigation following a slide on Sunday night.
The original slide occurred on the road midway between Ouray and Silverton on the border between Ouray and San Juan counties.
"It was about 6 feet high and 200 feet long on the highway center line," Nancy Shanks with CDOT said in a statement. "Crews closed the road, cleared the slide, escorted waiting traffic through and fully closed the pass again at midnight."
