Fatal Car Crash Knocks Down Traffic Pole, Closing Road

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. (CBS4) - Douglas County Sheriff closed a section of South University Boulevard in Highlands Ranch after a car hit a traffic pole, knocking it into the road.

One person was killed in the accident at the intersection of South University Boulevard and Venneford Ranch Road, just south of C-470.

The traffic pole that fell landed across the entire intersection, creating a closure that starts at South University Boulevard and Dad Clark Drive, and goes south a block to South University Boulevard and Venneford Ranch Road.

Officials had hoped to open the intersection by 6:30 this morning, but clearing the pole is taking longer than expected. As of 7 a.m., crews were still working to remove it off the ground.

The traffic light associated with that downed traffic pole will be out for the next two days.

All southbound lanes of University Boulevard remain closed as of 7 a.m., and two lanes in the northbound direction are open.
