Powdered Alcohol Ban Advancing At Colorado Capitol

DENVER (AP) - A powdered alcohol ban is advancing in the state Legislature, though sponsors insist the ban is more of a "time-out" to figure out how to regulate a product that doesn't exist yet.

The Senate voted 28-7 Monday for a bill to ban the sale of a product called Palcohol. The ban would automatically go away if federal regulators approve powdered alcohol.

The product is still in developments. It's a powder to which water is added for the equivalent of a shot of vodka or rum.

The bill has passed the House but isn't ready for the governor's desk yet. Senators amended the bill to require powdered alcohol to be taxed like liquor, not like beer. That means the bill must return to the House.
