13 Golf Carts Damaged In Jefferson County, $1,000 Reward Offered

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4)- Deputies in Jefferson County are searching for those who caused more than $25,000 in damage to golf carts and other property at the Meadows Golf Course.

Jeffco Sheriff's deputies say the damage happened overnight on two dates, Feb. 1 and Feb. 7 at the golf course located at 7007 Meadows Golf Club Drive in south Jefferson County.

"It almost seemed that they were playing bumper cars on the golf course. Some were rolled over, top, windshield, front-end damage, tires broken... one even got left out on a frozen lake," said Foothills Park and Recreation District Executive Director Ron Hopp.

The suspects gained access by damaging a locked fence that housed the carts. The damage to the fence alone was more than $2,700.

"They likely put a chain on the post and pulled and probably pulled it away with either a car or a truck," said Hopp.

During the vandalism the carts were taken for rides on the courses and on nearby Jeffco Open Space land. Thirteen carts were damaged during the two nights. Some carts had windshields broken off, the roofs removed and all suffered body damage. Carts had been rolled and left on their side, driven into landscaping and into a water hazard.

"It's really disappointing. I can understand having people trying to have fun but this almost was a blatant attempt to try to do damage to public property," said Hopp.

A surveillance camera captured images of the two suspects. One of them is wearing a backpack with strings instead of straps.
