Teen Who Was Forced To Ride Along With Carjacker Still A Bit Shaken Up

WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. (CBS4) - A Wheat Ridge teenager who escaped from a carjacking says he thought he was going to die.

Martine Cabral, 17, was washing his mother's car on the evening of Feb. 19 near West 38th Avenue and Chase Street.

A man now identified by police as Felipe Bustamante, 32, flashed a gun and started yelling at him to get in the vehicle. He did.

"I just didn't want to provoke him enough to where he just snaps and shoots me," Cabral said.

Martine knew he was in a dangerous situation -- in his mom's stolen car with the thief who had a gun.

"I was really scared. I honestly thought I was going to die," he told CBS4.

Using the app Snapchat on his phone he started sending photos to friends. They immediately called his father, who then alerted police.

Cabral then made the decision to escape from the car, and about four miles into the ride he jumped out.

"I got out and … I started crying. It was like I just like was underwater and just came back up. That's what it felt like," he said.

Martine jumped out at 10th and Knox Court and then ran for several blocks until he though it was safe and called for help.

The next day police located Bustamante in Denver and say they arrested him while he was committing another crime using the vehicle he allegedly stole.

"It just changed my whole perspective on life," Cabral said. "I never wanted to be home more."

Bustamante is now facing charges of robbery, vehicle theft and kidnapping.
