Eat Your Way Through The Snow

DENVER (CBS4) - Over 24 hours since it began, snow is still falling. If you've already gone sledding, skiing, snowshoeing, snowman-making, igloo-building, and snow angel-making (did I forget anything?), here is your next activity: snow eating.

We've got snow totals reaching into double digits, and possibilities for over a foot in some areas. This weekend storm could be the biggest we've had in three years.

What I'm trying to say is: there's a lot of snow! So to add to your fun winter activities, we've compiled some interesting recipes that use snow in food.

Syrup on Snow -- When you pour warmed maple syrup onto snow, it turns into a kind of candy. Apparently, 'Sugar on Snow' parties exist in Vermont, and the treat is considered a winter delicacy in Canada.

  • Boil syrup to 255 degrees F
  • Fill pan, cookie sheet or bowl with fresh snow (or just go outside to a flat slab of snow)
  • Drizzle the hot maple syrup lightly over the snow

Coconut Maple Snow Cream (Vegan) -- A simple, tasty, and arguably healthy, dessert from Treehugger. All you need is:

  • 8 cups of snow
  • 1 can coconut milk
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup

Chill the can of coconut milk, then when you're ready to use it skim off the cream. Put snow in a large bowl, stir in all the ingredients and lightly mix until it's fully combined.

Snow Ice Cream -- Probably the simplest homemade ice cream you'll find. Mix snow with three other ingredients. That's it, really (besides adding the toppings, of course). Check out YouTube's most viewed snow ice cream video for the instructions:

Slushie - And of course, there's the simple mainstay of the snow slushie. Fill a cup with snow and pour a little bit of your favorite juice across the top. Voila!

Spiked Snow Cones -- Similar to the slushie, making spiked snow cones is as easy as pouring your favorite cocktail over snow. I know, why didn't you think of this sooner!?

(If you don't feel like making it yourself, check out Denver's top frozen cocktails).

Snowy Hot Chocolate -- A wintery take on the decadent frozen hot chocolate dessert that debuted in the sweet shop Serendipity. The recipe was finally released and here it's been altered to include snow:

  • 3 ounces of your favorite chocolate
  • 2 teaspoons cocoa powder or hot chocolate mix
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 3 cups snow
  • Whipped cream

Chop the cholate into small pieces and put into double boiler (pot inside another pot filled halfway with water) to melt. Add cocoa and sugar, stirring until blended. Remove from heat and gradually add 1/2 cup of milk, stirring. Cool to room temperature. Once cooled, add the remaining milk and then pour that entire concoction into the snow, stirring until slushie-like in consistency. Top with whipped cream if you so desire, and enjoy the most chocolaty snow creation you'll ever taste.
