DIA Flight Traffic Moves Smoothly Despite Cancellations

DENVER (CBS4) - Denver International Airport has received a total of 7.5 inches from the weekend's storm system as of Sunday evening. They expect an additional 2-4 inches through Monday morning.

As of 4 p.m. on Sunday, 170 flight cancellations had been made for the day. This is roughly 11% of DIA's scheduled flights, meaning 89% of air traffic is running normally. A total of 185 flights were cancelled on Saturday.

Snow-removal crews worked all through Saturday night to keep the runways clear and the first departures of Sunday took place around 7 a.m. The snow fell lightly through the day on Sunday.

Pena Boulevard continues to be actively cleared and treated by snow-removal crews as well. The biggest problem, said DIA spokesperson Heath Montgomery, is that people are driving too fast.

All airlines are deicing for the duration of the storm, so passengers should expect some extra waiting time before departure.

The FAA has not established any traffic management plans for DIA as no significant delays have showed.

Last year's snow season resulted in a total of 38.4 inches of snow for DIA. This year, the airport already had 29.9 inches of snow prior to this weekend's storm, so it is likely that DIA will break last year's full season total.
