50 Immigrants Take Oath To Become U.S. Citizens

DENVER (CBS4)- Fifty immigrants in Colorado took their oath of allegiance to become U.S. citizens on Wednesday.

The naturalization ceremony at the History Colorado Center brought together people from over 27 countries. All met the requirements to become U.S. citizens.

Thanks to technology, President Barack Obama was able to welcome them, "You can help write the next great chapter in our American story and together we can keep the beacon that is America burning bright for all the world to see."

This was the third naturalization ceremony at the History Colorado Center with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

"We are honored that History Colorado will be the place where these Coloradans, who have worked so hard to earn the rights and privileges of U.S. citizenship, see their dreams come true. As we participate n this momentous occasion with our new citizens and their loved ones, we encourage people to come to the History Colorado Center and see how our nation's civic process works and witness this life changing moment in their personal histories," said History Colorado CEO Ed Nichols.

Naturalization is the process by which U.S. citizenship is conferred upon foreign citizens or nationals after fulfilling the requirements established by Congress.

After naturalization, foreign-born citizens enjoy nearly all the same benefits, rights and responsibilities that the Constitution gives to native-born U.S. citizens, including the right to vote.
