John Suthers Leads Colorado Springs Mayor's Race Fundraising

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Colorado's former attorney general is leading the fundraising race in his campaign for Colorado Springs mayor.

The Gazette reported Tuesday that according to the latest finance reports, John Suthers raised $51,047 between Jan. 28 and Feb. 10, and a total of $219,757.98 for the entire election season. Former Mayor Mary Lou Makepeace has raised the second highest amount, with $10,765.18 raised between Jan. 28 and Feb. 10 and $28,644.40 in total.

Suthers, attorney general from 2005 until last year, says he expects to have more than 1,000 contributions by the end of the campaign. Makepeace, the first woman elected to the office when she won the 1997 mayor's race, says her fundraising is gaining momentum.

Voters in 2010 changed the Colorado Springs city charter to create a strong mayor.
