Witness Who Helped Find Hit-And-Run Suspect Said SUV 'Just Took Off'

DENVER (CBS4) - A Denver-area man who witnessed a fatal hit-and-run early Sunday morning says the sight was one he'll never forget.

Cameron Robinson, 22, was driving down West Colfax Avenue with his cousin Oshea Wilson and two friends after a night downtown when they saw a man who was walking across the street get hit by an SUV.

"I seen him get ran over and then the person took off down the street," Robinson said. "Just took off. Just kept going."

According to police, Andrew Marthaler, 22, was attempting to cross Colfax near Fox Street when he was hit by the SUV. Instead of stopping to help, the driver kept going.

Robinson and Wilson and the others in their car quickly decided to follow the SUV.

"The only thing we could do is follow the car and get the license plate and try to help the most we can," Wilson said.

Police used that plate number the men reported to 911 to track down Brenda Rosales Montoya. According to arrest papers, Montoya admitted she was behind the wheel.

Robinson told CBS4 he's relieved police were able to find the person responsible, and glad what he did could help.

"It just looked so bad I just had to help. I had to do something. So, I couldn't just let (the driver) get away," he said.

Sandy Marthaler, the victim's mother, said she has no hard feelings for the driver responsible. Right now she's only thinking of her youngest son and the person he had become.

"Very caring. Very charming. He would charm people's socks off," she said.

Montoya appeared in court for the first time on Monday morning. She faces charges that include vehicular homicide, reckless driving and leaving the scene of a deadly accident. Her bond was set at $50,000.
