Explosive Devices Found In Aurora Apartment Are 'Big Mistake'

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - After an accidental shot was fired at an Aurora apartment complex last Thursday night, police responded and found an apartment full of suspicious devices, putting the neighborhood on alert.

Police described the suspicious devices that caused a temporary evacuation of apartment units as "fireworks used for paint ball boobie traps." Authorities are revealing little else.

CBS4 News sat down with the man allegedly responsible and his attorney, who said police made a big mistake.

"He's done nothing wrong," said Mike Evans, the suspect's attorney.

Yet 31-year-old, honorably discharged army veteran Peter Eiselt is facing a felony. He is being charged with illegal discharge of a weapon, and possibly more, after an incident at his apartment on Jan. 30.

"Sometimes it takes police a little bit of time to figure things out and realize that they made a mistake like they did in Peter's case," explained Evans. "The public was never in any danger," he said.

Speaking on behalf of his client, Evans said Eiselt accidentally fired his 9 millimeter handgun when he dropped it in his home. No one was hurt, but a neighbor called police and things quickly escalated into a bomb squad investigation when officers found suspicious devices.

Investigators also recovered several weapons from Eiselt's apartment. Evans said, "They were all legal."

He wouldn't describe the kind of weapons his client had or why he had them. Instead, he said it's not his client that's in the wrong, it's the authorities.

"Law enforcement has made a serious mistake. Probably more than they know," said Evans.

Aurora police say this is still an open investigation and they may be filing additional charges with the DA soon.
