DIA Holds 'Speed Dating' For Airports & Airlines, Hopes For International Deals

DENVER (CBS4) - There's a new effort to add more international flights out of Denver International Airport, and this week Denver is hosting the Routes Americas conferences with delegates from more than 50 countries, which gives DIA a chance to attract some new flights.

DIA often makes lists as one of the best airports in the country with thousands of travelers flying in and out of the airport every day. But right now it only has about 15 airlines that provide passenger service for flyers -- a number airport officials are hoping to increase this week.

"Europe is our largest market internationally, and it's underserved currently," Laura Jackson with DIA Air Service Development said.

Jackson said Denver hosting the eighth annual Routes Americas conference is great news for the Mile High City.

"It's the first time the conference has been held in the United States," she said.

The conference brings 51 countries both near and far to Denver, including more than 80 airlines all looking to make deals.

"The best way to describe it is speed dating for airlines and airports," Jackson said.

Jackson said DIA is specifically looking to expand, not only into Europe, but in Asia, the Middle East, and parts of South America.

"We talk about why Denver is a good market to expand service if they're currently providing service to Denver, or open up a new route to Denver," she said.

It will make traveling from those parts of the world from Denver easier and possibly less expensive.

Deals between airports and airlines can take years to confirm, so it's unlikely to happen in the immediate future.

The conference continues through Tuesday.
