Police Chase Ends With Crash Into Home

DENVER (CBS4) - Four suspects are in jail after a car chase and crash that followed a report of shots fired Wednesday night.

"I heard the big crash first so I ran upstairs and looked out and that's when I saw the puff of smoke and I realized that he hit the neighbor's brick fence," said neighbor Jill Easler.

Denver police say at about 10 p.m. they received reports of shots fired near 51st Avenue and Durham Court in Denver. Nearby officers responded and spotted a car they believed to be involved, and a chase began.

The driver lost control soon afterwards and crashed into a home on Andrews Drive and Ursula Street. The impact was so forceful that the brick wall was reduced to rubble, and bricks flew far enough to break the windows of nearby homes.

Those inside were scared because the entire family was inside. Fortunately no one in the home was hurt.

"He was scared for his daughter and son. The tree stopped it or else it would have hit the house," said family member Osvaldo Barreras.

The four males inside the vehicle took off, but police quickly captured three. The fourth was on the run for roughly an hour while SWAT officers and a police helicopter were called in to help with the search.

On Thursday morning police released the names of the suspects:

- Xavier Claypool, 21
- Isaac Hernandez, 18
- Deshawn Johnson, 19
- Michael Byrd, 20

Residents told CBS4 they have never seen anything like this.

"It was scary. It almost reminded me of something you see on the news in the Middle East because they had the K-9 out, their weapons out, they're looking in back yards. So I knew that it was pretty serious," said Easler.

Officers said there were no injuries in the initial shooting that sparked the chase and crash.
