Historic East Coast Storm Already Impacting Flights At DIA

DENVER (CBS4) - People on the East Coast are bracing for what could be a historic storm. A 250-mile stretch of the northeast could see between one and three feet of snow, and that's already affecting operations at Denver International Airport.

As of Monday evening, at least 6,500 flights have already been canceled nationwide. United Airlines has canceled all flights in and out of all three New York airports.

But Monday's warm, sunny skies make it hard for passengers arriving at DIA to understand how their flights are canceled due to weather. Vicky McCaffrey came to Colorado from New York for the Stock Show and has found herself stuck in Denver.

"I had reservations for a flight out tomorrow and the flight has already been canceled," she said. "I spent an hour on the phone and on the Internet trying to make reservations to go home and it didn't work. So I'm out here at the airport to make reservations with a person."

Ira Redman was in Colorado skiing and is trying to get home to New York. He gave up and is heading to work in Miami instead.

"Unfortunately, If I would have stayed here I wouldn't get out until Wednesday, Thursday," Redman said.

Other New Yorkers scrambled to get out ahead of the storm Monday morning.

"We knew we weren't getting out on Wednesday, so our best option was to try to get a flight early morning today to get out in front of it, and we were successful, thankfully," a man from New York said.

Some travelers admitted that being stuck in warm, sunny Colorado isn't a bad option.
