4-Year-Old Girl Dies After Falling Into Icy Pond Near Playground
LOVELAND, Colo. (CBS4)- A little girl died Wednesday after she fell into an icy pond at a Loveland park where her family had gathered for soccer practice.
Emergency services personnel rushed to the Loveland Sports Park about 5:43 p.m. Wednesday on reports that a 4-year-old girl had fallen into an icy pond.
The park is located about a mile from Interstate 25 and the Highway 34 interchange on Boyd Lake Avenue.
When they arrived they tried to resuscitate Naomi Delgado and rushed her to Medical Center of the Rockies. Attempts to save her life were unsuccessful.
Police say Naomi was at the park with her family for soccer practice. She was playing at a nearby playground when they believe she walked out onto the pond ice and fell through.
When her father could not see her at the playground, he searched for Naomi, found her in the pond and pulled her from the water.
Loveland communications center personnel provided CPR instructions to people at the park until emergency personnel arrived.
The coroner said Naomi drowned but that hypothermia was also a factor.
"I wanted to say a prayer for the little girl because I've got grandchildren," said Loveland resident David Broccoli.
Authorities said the pond was icy but not frozen solid. There is no fence or barrier between the pond and the playground.
"You have recreational facilities including playgrounds, ballfields picnic areas and bodies of water like ponds and streams that co-exist and very seldom do you find fences that separate them from one another," said City of Loveland spokesman Tom Hacker.
