Reported Earthquake In Southern Colorado Never Happened

FOUNTAIN, Colo. (CBS4) - An earthquake that reportedly rattled El Paso County in southern Colorado early Monday apparently never happened.

Earlier Monday the U.S. Geological Survey in Golden reported a 3.0 quake 12 miles southeast of Fountain that occurred at a depth of 5 km, equivalent to 3.1 miles deep. Its exact coordinates were 38.537°N 104.570°W.

Now the Denver Post reports the USGS says a faulty sensor combined with a new analyst who misread data filed a false report.

The USGS believes the sensor was triggered by tremors in Kansas and Oklahoma.
