Scam: Suspects Try To Get Money From Outstanding Warrants
FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4)- The Larimer County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a scam designed to provoke fear and garner cash from the victims.
The suspects will call victims, identifying themselves as a law enforcement official, and demand money.
The victims are told they have outstanding arrest warrants with specified bond amounts and must send all or part of the money to various websites to avoid immediate arrest.
The Larimer County Sheriff's Office says the utmost concern is that the suspects making the phone calls are providing legitimate names and information of law enforcement employees making them seem credible.
The Larimer County Sheriff wants to confirm that no law enforcement agency will contact a citizen via telephone and demand immediate payment to avoid arrest.
These criminals tend to target the more vulnerable population which often includes senior members of the community.
Sheriff's deputies warn residents to never send money if on the receiving end of a phone call like those described above. Immediately hang up and call law enforcement to report the scam.
