Alleged Driver In Fatal December Hit & Run In Aurora Arrested

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - A man accused of leaving the scene of a crash that claimed the life of another man in late December has been arrested.

According to Aurora police, John Dale Bednar, 53, was critically injured in the crash that happened near South Parker Road and South Peoria Street early morning on Dec 27. He never recovered from his injuries and died in the hospital on Jan. 2.

Police say a person inside a blue 2001 Subaru Forrester, identified as Eric James Stell, 33, t-boned a 2001 Mercedes that didn't yield during a turn.

According to Lt. Michael McClelland with Aurora police, Stell fled the scene.

"Although initially uncooperative with our investigation, Stell was interviewed by traffic detectives and admitted to being the driver of the Subaru, after first claiming he wasn't and that his vehicle was stolen that evening from the parking lot of a nearby drinking establishment he was patronizing," McClelland with Aurora police said in a statement.

Investigators believe alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the crash.

Charges against Stell are pending, but he's facing several felonies.
