Colorado Springs Woman Describes How Stranger Fatally Shot Her Dog In Park

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) - A woman whose dog was shot several times and killed by a stranger in Colorado Springs on Monday said didn't get a chance to get her dog to heel.

"Before I had a chance to get her to come back to me, he pulled out a gun and shot her several times," the woman told KKTV.

The dog's owner, whom KKTV didn't identify, said she was playing ball with Sydney in Penstemon Park when the Australian shepherd approached the man. He pulled a gun and shot the dog. She died in the park. He then left the park before police arrived.

"I thought to myself, 'I should probably grab her just in case,' but by that time she had noticed him already and started jogging towards him with her ball still in her mouth to greet him," the owner told KKTV.

She said her dog was off-leash, which isn't allowed in Colorado Springs parks, but doesn't understand why that could merit what happened.

"She wouldn't (hurt anyone). She's a very friendly dog, she loves to greet everybody, she loves to say 'hi' to everybody. I just wish if he was afraid of dogs, that I would have had the chance to let him know. I just wish that he would have been able to know that she wasn't going to cause him any harm."

Police said they do not have a description of the man.

She said she adopted Sydney when the dog was 3 months old.
