Teen Killed In Collision With Semi Near Craig
CRAIG, Colo. (CBS4) – A 17-year-old boy was killed Friday afternoon when the pickup truck he was driving collided with a tractor-trailer near Craig.
According to the Colorado State Patrol, Torivio Tovar, 17, from Craig was traveling in a 1997 Ford F250 westbound on US Highway 40 when he drifted into the eastbound lanes and collided with a Peterbilt semi driven by Jeffrey Higgs, 47, also from Craig.
"After this collision the Ford traveled back across the westbound lane and came to rest on the westbound shoulder of the road," the State Patrol said in a statement. "The Peterbilt traveled off the south side of the highway and rolled over."
The side fuel tank on the semi ruptured and began spilling diesel fuel on the road and shoulder.
Tovar was pronounced dead at the scene and Higgs was transported to Memorial Hospital in Craig with minor injuries.
"Excessive speed and driver impairment are not suspected, however, the crash is still under investigation by the Colorado State Patrol Vehicular Crimes Unit."
