USA Cycling Chief Executive Johnson To Retire
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - Steve Johnson, the president and CEO of USA Cycling, plans to retire after the United States hosts the road world championships next year in Richmond, Virginia.
Johnson said Tuesday in a statement that he was ready to step away after 15 years working for the sport's national governing body. Along with serving as chief executive, Johnson also has been its director of athletics and chief financial officer.
He took over amid a storm of controversy. Not only were several American athletes, including Lance Armstrong, embroiled in doping scandals, the organization itself was in financial peril. Over the years, Johnson helped to place USA Cycling on a more solid foundation.
Bob Stapleton, who chairs USA Cycling's board of directors, said the search for a new chief executive will begin in January.
