'Vets On Ice' Introduces Veterans To The Colorado Outdoors
PARKER, Colo. (CBS4) – The third annual Vets On Ice fishing event will take place Jan. 31 on Evergreen Lake this year.
Vets On Ice was created to introduce military veterans to the Colorado outdoors through an ice fishing event put on by a collaboration of local pro-veteran, nonprofit groups.
The event is free and open to all veterans and active duty military members. It includes a lunch. Anyone can volunteer at the event or donate.
"The main goal of the event is to provide a day of relaxation through fishing, build comradery, and provide a first rate experience for our veterans," the Just One Day group said in a statement.
The event is put on by Patriot Anglers, Just One Day, Golden VFW Post 4171, Born To Fish Media and the Evergreen Convention and Visitors Bureau. Supporting groups include Colorado Signs, Discount Tackle and FishExplorer.
"Currently, the veteran population of our nation is experiencing staggering homelessness, suicide, and divorce rates. We believe that time spent in outdoor recreation can change the life outlook of troubled veterans as well as provide a quality family bonding experience."
Those interested in contributing to the event can donate "on-ice giveaways" such as ice fishing tackle, ice rods and reels, gift cards, promotional materials, and bait as well as cash funding for the purchase of other items for the event.
"Our goal this year is to host a great event to 200 participants to include veterans and their family members."
