About 1 Million Expected At DIA During Holiday Week

DENVER (CBS4/AP) - Traffic is picking up at Denver International Airport ahead of Thanksgiving.

About a million people are expected to pass through the airport this holiday week, with about 152,000 of them traveling on Tuesday. That's nearly 10,000 more people than on a normal day.

Security lines at fifth busiest airport in the U.S. on Tuesday were moving smoothly.

Travelers flying with gifts shouldn't wrap them before flying. The Transportation Security Administration will unwrap gifts if they want to inspect them.

One family told CBS4 they got to the airport early enough to return home and retrieve their forgotten IDs.

A woman trying to travel to St. Louis Monday night said her flight was delayed until Tuesday because of the unrest in Ferguson. The said her time at DIA hasn't been bad.

"It's crazy, but I don't know, there's something about Denver … everyone is just kind of cool," the woman said. "So as many people as there is, it's still a fun place to be and always exciting."

"It's actually not too bad. We were expecting a lot more, we got here a little early so we could kind of take our time, but it's not so bad," a man said. "So I think we're going to have a lot of time today; better than waiting in lines … we'll take this any Thanksgiving."

Airports across the country are preparing for delays as a nor'easter is expected to drop rain along the East Coast and heavy snow inland.

Get to the airport about two hours before departure. Check flight statuses and other information at FlyDenver.com.

Parking is still available in the garage and outlying parking lots and new screens are providing real-time updates on shuttle bus arrivals.

Meanwhile, the Colorado Springs Airport is offering travelers free parking through the end of the year.
