CDOT Hopes To Keep Delays To A Minimum For Holiday Travelers

IDAHO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) - There's more snow on the way this week and that could throw a wrench into holiday travel plans.

Colorado Department of Transportation crews plan to keep the roads safe and the delays to a minimum this week, especially on Interstate 70 in the high country.

When the snow starts piling up in the mountains, so does the traffic -- especially around the holidays.

"Last year about 180,000 people went through the tunnels, basically from the Wednesday through Sunday with the Thanksgiving weekend … we'll expect the same if not more again this year," Amy Ford with CDOT said.

Ford says this season they are ready for both.

"We've actually added 37 new personnel up in that corridor who are working," Ford said. "As well as that, we've added a number of different new vehicles."

In a continued effort to limit the number of vehicles on the road this ski season CDOT is partnering with the Denver Council of Governments to launch a ski-pool. Drivers sign up online for a van, use it to pick up their passengers, and CDOT will pay for the gas.

The ski pooling program is still in the planning phase but CDOT expects it to launch by the first of the year.
