Why Hail Damaged Cars In Metro Area Will Take 6 Months To Repair

DENVER (CBS4)- Drivers in the Denver metro area who suffered hail damage to their vehicles in one of the severe storms this summer or fall will have to wait a long time to get those repairs.

"It looked like golf balls falling through the sky. It was insane," said one driver.

"The phones won't stop ringing. People won't stop coming through the door and it's just like mass chaos," said Nylund's Collision Center owner Rob Grieve.

The task of fixing hail damage is painstaking and time consuming.

"He's prying it out one at a time. Image you have thousands of dents on these cars," said Grieve.

Nylund's Collision Center is scheduling about 15 hail repairs a week from now until May 2015.

"Imagine a 15,000 car pileup on I-70, this is what happens when hail comes, it just wrecks a lot of cars all at one time and the body shops get flooded," said Grieve.

Melissa Hogge will be looking at these hail dents until at least February 2015.

"Nothing you can do about it. It's the forces of nature but definitely not a cost I was planning on," said Hogge.

Grieve said he's never been booked this far out and he fears with the winter storms ahead, it may only get worse.

"I'm going to take it one day at a time," said Grieve.

The Front Range is the hail capital of the United States with an average of eight to nine hail days a year. Hail damage should be included for driver who have comprehensive coverage on their auto insurance policy.
