Second Holmes' Sanity Exam Allowed

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) — A second court-ordered psychiatrist to examine the Aurora movie theater gunman will be able to give his opinion about James Holmes' sanity at trial.

A judge ruled Friday that the second sanity exam undercuts the first exam and should be permitted. Defense attorneys for Holmes had tried to throw out Dr. William Reid's report saying it is unnecessary because it reached similar conclusions to the first psychiatrist's report.

According to the Denver Post, Judge Carlos Samour disagreed that the reports reach the same conclusion.

Holmes has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to charges of killing 12 people and injuring 70 in the July 20, 2012, attack. The motions were a sign that Holmes' mental state will be a focal point during his trial.
