Cold Prompts Volunteers, Charities To Focus On Homeless, Veterans In Need

DENVER (CBS4) - The rapid plunge in temperatures shifted focus to Denver's homeless on Veterans Day, especially to military veterans who live on the streets.

As below-freezing temperatures prompted organizers to move the annual Veterans Day ceremony from Fort Logan National Cemetery indoors, the local Volunteers of America chapter was assisting homeless and veterans in need with free meals.

They partnered with a local food truck, Epicurean, to dish out free meals. Nearby, the VOA said it was expecting a small turnout, but that meant more charities were opening their doors.

"We should have a smaller turnout today, but that's a good thing," Jim White with VOA said. "With it being 10 or 11 degrees, all the shelters and several churches have opened up and they allow people to stay in on a day like today, versus everybody (having) to get up in the morning and go out."

The VOA said it's also counseling veterans who need assistance on employment options and long-term housing. The downtown VOA office is located at 2660 Larimer St.
