Chihuly Crafts Exclusive Piece For Denver Botanic Gardens

DENVER (CBS4) - The popular Chihuly exhibit may be leaving the Denver Botanic Gardens at the end of the month, but a permanent reminder will be added shortly after.

A new work by artist Dale Chihuly, whose work was featured throughout the gardens this summer, will anchor the Ellipse garden.

It will be comprised of approximately 700 hand-blown glass elements and will stand more than 11 feet tall. It will be installed in December.

"We will never forget this extraordinary year and the outpouring of enthusiasm for the combination of Chihuly and the gardens. Now, we will have the opportunity to relive this unique and dynamic fusion long into the future," Brian Vogt, the CEO of the gardens, said in a statement.

Donations from Robert and Judi Newman, the RC Kemper Charitable Trust and UMB Bank helped secure the art.

Chihuly said he used a red, orange and yellow color pallet because it reminded him of the skies and sunsets he enjoyed during his visits to Denver.

"I am so pleased that a significant work of art will be added to Denver Botanic Gardens' permanent collection," Chihuly said. "It is such a beautiful garden and such a great city."

The exhibit opened June 14 and will close Nov. 30.
