Woman Receives Probation In Child Abuse Case

DENVER (CBS4) - A woman accused of abusing her children by forcing them to live in unsanitary conditions was sentenced to five years of probation and 90 days in the Denver County Jail on Friday.

Lorinda Bailey, 36, pleaded guilty in August to one count of felony child abuse.

Another man charged in the case, Wayne Sperling, is scheduled for a hearing on Thursday.

Prosecutors, who said the conditions in which Bailey's children lived were some of the most horrific they've seen, argued for seven years in prison for Bailey. But the judge, citing that there was no serious physical harm to the children, declined a lengthier sentence.

Bailey was ordered to complete a mental health program, and she cannot have contact with children in her home.

The children, 2, 4, 5 and 6 at the time of the crimes, were malnourished, not toilet-trained and communicated in grunts when authorities removed them from the home in October 2006.
