Military Heroes Honored At Annual Veterans Salute

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4)- Military veterans were honored at the annual Veterans Salute in Aurora on Thursday. This is the 20th year for the event.

This year in addition to honoring military heroes, organizers also wanted to focus on families.

The keynote speaker at Thursday's ceremony was Kelly Sullivan Loughren, the granddaughter of Albert Sullivan. He was one of the five Sullivan brothers who died together on a Navy ship in World War II.

Their story as part of the inspiration for the movie Saving Private Ryan.

"The 2014 event is intended to celebrate the children, spouses, parents and family members of service members because they serve, too," said Sheila Anthony, event organizer. "We honor our military heroes each year and want to be sure we acknowledge the significant role played by their family."

The ceremony is presented by the Aurora Center for Active Adults at the Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum.
