Ballots Still Being Tallied In Adams, Jefferson Counties

BRIGHTON, Colo. (CBS4)- Nearly 24 hours after the polls closed, ballots were still being tallied in Adams County. So much attention is being placed on those votes because the balance of power in the Colorado's state Legislature is at stake.

The delay in counting the ballots is being blamed on the volume of ballots that came in very late.

"There are a couple state House races that are coming down to the last few votes here in Adams County and in Jefferson County but I don't want anyone to think we are putting more emphasis on this counting process than we did on the previous ballots," said Adams County spokesman Jim Siedlecki.

Those tight races are District 24 for state Senate with Democrat Judy Solano and Republican Beth Humenik and for state Representative District 31 Republican Carol Beckler and incumbent Democrat Joe Salazar.

"One problem that we may have going forward is that the last few thousand ballots that we have are always the most time consuming to count because voter intent may be in question," said Siedlecki.

One difficulty has been with a fairly obscure race in Adams County, the County Surveyor. No one was registered as a candidate so all votes are write-in and have to be counted manually.

That has slowed down the whole process. Adams County said the votes are being counted as quickly as they can.
