DENVER (CBS4) – Denver Mayor Michael Hancock and city council members say they support the Colorado Department of Transportation's alternative proposal on a plan to revamp the Interstate 70 corridor through North Denver.

The plan would partially cover I-70. Also known as PCL, the plan would move I-70 underground between Brighton and Colorado boulevards in the Globeville and Swansea neighborhoods.

The underground route would fit 10 lanes.

Hancock says it's an innovative solution to fix an outdated infrastructure.

"We are behind the alternative option. We believe it will help us connect these communities and move them forward with a better opportunity toward improved quality of life," Hancock said.

The mayor said the plan raises some environmental concerns. He's asking CDOT to address the issues of air quality, drainage and housing.
