Rape Suspect Wanted In Colorado Agrees To Return To Massachusetts
FORT EDWARD, N.Y. (AP) — A man suspected of child-rape and a cross-country crime spree will return to Massachusetts to face charges after waiving his right to an extradition hearing in upstate New York.
Washington County District Attorney Tony Jordan says 26-year-old Gregory Lewis appeared in court Thursday with a public defender. Lewis is wanted in Massachusetts for a felony charge of sexual assault on a child.
Police say the Southbridge, Massachusetts, man spent six weeks on the run after cutting off a court-ordered monitoring device. He's accused of committing a string of rapes, kidnappings and robberies of women in North Carolina, Colorado and Oregon.
Lewis was captured Tuesday in Fort Edward after driving into the Hudson River while fleeing from a traffic stop.
Jordan said Massachusetts police plan to retrieve Lewis from the Washington County Jail Friday.
