Mother Of Murder Victim Prepares For Court Nearly 20 Years Later

DENVER (CBS4)- The mother of a murder victim has been waiting a long time for her son's killers to face a judge. Now two men investigators believe committed the murder will finally go before a judge.

Darryl Givens was shot and killed 18 years ago in the 2700 block of Madison.

"In the middle of the night, like they say, messed my life up, terrible... took my baby," said Darryl's mother Alice Givens.

When police arrived they found Darryl lying in the street with three gun shot wounds to the head.

Before he was shot, Darryl had testified in a murder trial where he took the stand for the prosecution against a gang leader. He knew he was taking a risk.

"It ended up wrong but it was right," said Alice.

A few months after Darryl testified, police in Denver believe Antonio Domena and Sheldon Long brought Darryl to 27th and Madison and shot him.

"We kind of knew, we knew all the time but we couldn't put the pieces together," said Alice.

Police in Denver reopened the case this year and arrested Domena and Long last week. They had been free for nearly 20 years.

"I just said, 'It's over' because I knew, I knew, I felt in my heart they were the right two people," said Alice.

Domena and Long face charges of first-degree murder and retaliation against a witness.

Alice said she is going to support her son and follow the trial the whole way.

"I wanted to give up because it was so long. It was just so long," said Alice. "I'm going to court tomorrow, yes sir, I'm going to court along with half the family."

The gang leader Darryl testified against is serving a life sentence.
