Cash Stolen From Car Crash Victim's Purse

LONGMONT, Colo. (CBS4)- Police in Longmont are investigating a theft that may have involved one of their own. Now the Boulder County Sheriff's Office is taking over the case of who took cash out of a deadly car crash victim's purse.

The crash in late September took the lives of both drivers.

"Two people were killed, both of them female, one of them a mother," said Longmont Police Commander Jeff Satur.

As first responders and police worked to care for the surviving passengers and investigate the crash, something else happened to items that belonged to one of the victims.

"It's important to us, our credibility, our trust and so it's disheartening," said Satur.

Sometime after the crash one victim's family told police that cash had gone missing from the woman's purse.

Deputies say whoever took the money did it after officials secured the crash scene.

Based on the timeline investigators have ruled out witnesses and the general public.

"We have made a list of who had access to the purse and we're talking to everybody who had access," said Boulder County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Heidi Prentup.

Investigators are confident they'll find whoever is responsible but have not yet identified a suspect.

Police will not say how much cash was stolen.
