Serial Thief Targets Vehicles, Passes Over Valuables

MEAD, Colo. (CBS4)- A serial thief continues to target vehicles, including hitting one Mead neighborhood twice, but seems to pass over valuables. Police want to track down the criminal before more vehicles are damaged.

The Liberty Ranch subdivision in the Town of Mead has been struck twice by the suspect who breaks into vehicles.

Purses, car stereos and laptops are popular items stolen but the thief is in such a rush that other valuables are being overlooked.

Brandon Cox was home Monday night when someone rifled through his scar, parked just feet from his front door.

"We were in the downstairs living room watching TV," said Cox.

He is one of more than 20 victims of a serial burglar who seems to have a soft spot for the new Liberty Ranch subdivision in Mead.

"This was opened up, all my papers," Cox described as he showed CBS4 how the thief rifled through the inside of his glove box and car.

Cox said it's hard to know what the burglar was after. Papers containing his personal information were strewn about. Whoever broke in did not take any of his valuables.

"I had $100 sitting up top, paper clipped to a piece of paper and they didn't take that," said Cox.

The Weld County Sheriff's Office believes the break-ins on Monday could be connected to a similar string of thefts in the same area in September.

Deputies are trying to identify a suspect before that person can hit Liberty Ranch for a third time.

"I'm hopeful, this is a smart enough neighborhood, I wouldn't be surprised if somebody's already put a camera up," said Cox.

Detectives took swabs from the cars broken into. They're hoping a DNA match leads them to their suspect.
