Thieves Targeting Cars In Church Parking Lots, Other Venues

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) - Deputies in Douglas County would like the public's help identifying suspects who have been breaking into vehicles around the south metro area.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, the suspects the have been breaking windows to get into vehicles located at churches, parks, pools, trail heads, fitness centers and other areas, and taking purses and wallets.

"We believe that all of these folks are associated with each other," Sgt. Ron Hanavan said.

Five different churches have been targeted since September, including during a funeral. The usually strike in broad daylight and often during sporting events.

Surveillance video caught one suspect using stolen information to purchase items at a Home Depot store. Stolen credit cards have been used at various metro area locations.

"They're taking wallets, purses and then secondarily, then they're using that to commit identity theft," Hanavan said.

As deputies search for the opportunistic bandits, some Douglas County residents say they would like to issue their own form of justice.

"What would I like to see happen to them? A thorough beating in the parking lot," a man said.

The suspects in all cases are two women and possibly two men. The definitely know each other and are working together.
