Voters In Adams County Receive Duplicate Ballots

BRIGHTON, Colo. (CBS4)- Some voters in Adams County received duplicate ballots after a mistake by the printing vendor.

Adams County Clerk and Recorder Karen Long said she is working with the Secretary of State's office to correct the error that has been traced back to the external printing vendor used by Adams County, Runbeck Election Services.

The Arizona company erroneously printed duplicate ballots that were delivered to 243 voters in Adams County.

"Once we verified that a mistake was made by the printer we immediately contacted the Secretary of State's office and began recovering as many of the duplicate ballots as possible," said Long in a statement.

Some ballots have been recovered. The Clerk and Recorder's office said they are contacting all voters who may have received a duplicate ballot.

A total of 209,000 ballots were mailed to voters in Adams County.

Signing and submitting more than one ballot is illegal and there are safeguards in place to help election judges intercept any suspicious submissions.

"The signature verification system scans each ballot and is designed to detect any duplicate," said Long. "If a ballot is flagged by the system as a duplicate, it is forwarded to the District Attorney's office for further investigation."

Runbeck also prints ballots for at least four other counties in Colorado including Mesa County. An estimated 100 ballots were printed in error in that county.

Runbeck is also working to correct an error in Maricopa County, Ariz. where faulty envelopes were printed.
