The burglar broke in through an unlocked first floor patio at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday through an unsecured patio door.

A mother and child awoke to the sounds of an intruder inside their home.

"At this time we believe he was possibly armed with a handgun, unknown type or make," said Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office Patrol Captain Chris George.

The pair saw the masked intruder were able to escape safely and call for help. The suspect robbed the home but then ran away.

Three different police agencies have been involved in the search for the suspect in the case, but so far there's only a vague description of that person available. He was described as being a white male, 5-foot-9, 150 to 200 pounds and he was last seen wearing all black clothes.

Investigators believe the home invasion was an isolated incident but are using the incident to remind residents to lock their doors.

"We believe this to be a burglary that was interrupted by the homeowners who were home at the time," said George. "Just be aware of your surroundings and when you do go to sleep make sure the doors are secured, double check the front doors and windows.
