Widower Receives $1 Million Award In Hit-And-Run Verdict

DENVER (CBS4) - A jury has awarded $1 million to the husband of a woman who was killed in a hit-and-run accident on Colorado Boulevard in January.

A jury found 85-year-old Marshall Smith and his ex-wife, Ada, liable in the hit-and-run death on Jan. 9 that killed Leanna Hund as she was crossing Colorado at Exposition Avenue to her job at a financial planning firm.

Denver police said Smith drove the car around the corner, knocking down Hund, driving over her and leaving the scene.

Police located the 1985 Impala that Smith drove at his home. The car was in his ex-wife's name and she let him drive it.

Hund's husband, Harold Rivers, was eager for the Smiths to be held accountable.

"You know, I labored under the impression if they catch this person I will feel better," he said. "But it won't bring her back."

The civil court jury found the driver maliciously ran over Hund.

Smith also faces criminal charges of leaving the scene of an accident involving death.
