2 Drivers Charged In Hit & Run That Killed Motorcyclist In Aurora

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - Two separate drivers have been charged in connection with the hit-an-run accident that killed a motorcyclist in Aurora in August.

Police said on Aug. 25 two drivers of pickup trucks were traveling together on Mississippi Avenue and turned left onto Moline Street in front of the motorcyclist. The motorcyclist laid down his bike to avoid the accident, police said, and was missed by the first truck. The second truck, however, ran over the motorcyclist, identified as Derek Dahl.

Dahl was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

The drivers got out of their trucks to examine the victim but then left the scene. A witness photographed the trucks before they left south on Moline Street.

After a Medina Alert was issued police found the trucks and drivers in South Aurora.

The driver of the first truck, Dustin James Beers, 25, of Centennial, has been charged with vehicular homicide, leaving the scene after an accident involving death, driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, reckless driving, failing to yield the right of way, and driving with a canceled license.

The driver of the truck that allegedly ran Dahl over, Paden Alan Clements, 21, of Wheat Ridge, has been charged with leaving the scene after accident involving death, careless driving resulting in death, failing to yield the right of way, and driving with a suspended license.

"Both trucks stopped and their occupants got out and looked at the rider. A passenger called 911 and then all except one passenger got back into the trucks and left the scene. The passenger that did not get back in the trucks was left behind and stayed with the rider until help arrived," police said in a statement.

Police said both drivers have been cooperative with the investigation.
