Fugitive Rapist From Boulder Arrested In Mexico
BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4) - A convicted rapist who fled before his sentencing in February was nabbed this week in Mexico.
Calvin Nagy, 38, was convicted on Nov. 22, 2013, of felony sexual assault and misdemeanor assault charges in Boulder County. Nagy, whose sentencing was scheduled for Feb. 6, was released on $7,500 bond after his conviction. He was required to check in with court officials by phone each day, but as his sentencing drew near, he stopped calling.
He was the Colorado Bureau of Investigations' most wanted sex offender and faced a life sentence. He was also convicted on sexual assault in 1996 and was sentenced to probation.
Boulder police said they received a tip this week that Nagy was living in Playa del Carmen, a town south on Cancun on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. Police coordinated with the FBI and Mexican law enforcement to arrest Nagy and transport him to Colorado.
He is in custody at the Boulder County Jail. He's scheduled to appear in court on Friday at 1 p.m.
Boulder County District Attorney Stan Garnett praised the police's efforts in apprehending Nagy.
"I know that the Boulder Police Department, and in particular Detective Brannon Winn, have been tireless in their efforts to track down Nagy. The work of the Boulder Police, the FBI and Mexican officials to bring this dangerous offender to justice has been exemplary," Garnett said in a statement.
In February, Nagy's victim, who asked to remain anonymous, told CBS4 she was frustrated Boulder County Judge Andrew MacDonald allowed Nagy to remain free on bail.
"To allow someone who has committed such egregious crimes against women in our community and state, to let them walk around, not only waiting for trial for two years, but after he's been convicted he was given a pass. The judge basically said, 'Walk on through,' " she said.
