The Traffic Headache In Cherry Creek Begins

DENVER (CBS4) - Beginning at 10 p.m. Saturday and lasting until 7 a.m. Tuesday the intersection of 1st Avenue and University Boulevard in Cherry Creek will be completely blocked off.

Approximately 100,000 drivers go through the intersection every day.

The closure is designed to finish a sewer maintenance project that's been going on since January. The intersection has been prone to flooding.

The intersection will be completely closed so crews will be able to finish most of the paving.

The intersection has been tough to get around or through during the construction, and on Monday, thousands will have to figure out another way.

"(I'll) avoid it as much as possible, but today I had to come to Whole Foods to get something special, so I came around the other way … a bit of a pain," a shopper said.

"Sometimes it's like 15 minutes to get here even though it's a mile if you take Speer, so even if you have to go a little farther to get around it, it makes it a little easier," another shopper said.

On Monday commuters might want to think about using Alameda, 6th or 8th avenues. Another route is Colorado and Downing or Logan, although those options aren't perfect.
