Boulder Marathon Canceled Due To Floods, Runner's Death

BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4) - Next month's Boulder Marathon has been canceled.

In a letter to participants Friday, race director Jeff Mason blamed last year's flooding and the death of a participant in the half-marathon this year.

"It's disappointing to have to tell you this news, but know that we have a lot to look forward to in 2015," he wrote.

The run was scheduled for Oct. 5.

Mason said the task of producing this year's event became impossible.

All runners who planned to participate can use their entry fee for the 2015 half-marathon or fall marathon, Mason said.

The news was met with considerable displeasure on the Boulder Marathon Facebook page on Friday. Dozens posted that they want their money back -- not applied toward next year.

"This is absurd! I ran most of the course last week and it's in perfect condition. I have no idea what the flood has to do with this," Nick Williams wrote.

By Friday evening, organizers had not yet announced the cancellation on its page. Its last post was dated Aug. 20.

"I also need my money back," Melissa Hunt wrote. "I cannot commit to the 2015 races."
