Registered Sex Offender Accused Of Assaulting Young Girl In Lakewood

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (CBS4) - Police in Lakewood have obtained an arrest warrant for a registered sex offender currently in custody on another charge for an alleged sexual assault on a 8-year-old girl.

According to police, Angel Gavino Alcaraz, 57, is believed to have assaulted the girl at an apartment complex on Miller Court in Lakewood where the girl lives and he does maintenance.

The investigation revealed that Alcaraz previously had done similar maintenance work at the Terrace Park Apartments in Arvada where police arrested him for a similar crime.

"They were working the case and became aware that there was a similar case in Arvada with the same suspect," Steve Davis with Lakewood police said.

Both properties are owned by Crane Properties and the owner admits he did not do a background check on Alcaraz.

"They would have found he's a registered sex offender," Davis said.

Alcaraz remains in custody in the Jefferson County Jail on the Arvada charges.

The child's father called police to report the alleged crime.

"Lakewood detectives began their investigation when they were called to the Miller Court address in June. The victim and her family reported that Alcaraz approached the victim and separated her from other children before assaulting her," Lakewood police said in a statement.

The Lakewood warrant adds a count of sexual assault on a child in addition to the Arvada charges.

Alcaraz's background shows an arrest out of Thornton in 1991 for sex assault on a child. Some tenants at Terrace Park say they were always concerned about him.

"He has keys to every apartment and knows when they're home and not home," a resident said. "If you give someone access make sure they're not an offenders."

Police believe there could be more victims.

Additional Information From Lakewood Police

Anyone who feels they may have information that would assist in the investigation and/or regarding Alcaraz is asked to contact Lakewood Police Detective Jennifer Moore at 303-987-7224.
