Hancock's 2015 Budget Includes $47 Million Transformation To North Denver

DENVER (CBS4) - Denver Mayor Michael Hancock wants to spend $47 million on improvements to north Denver neighborhoods, including the first major overhaul to the Brighton Boulevard area in decades.

That project is part of a $1.2 billion general fund budget Hancock proposed to the city council on Monday. The city council must approve the budget. Final adoption would occur in November.

Other big-ticket items include:

* $10 million for parks and recreation improvements -- both to trails and walkways as well as to playgrounds, athletic fields, and basketball and tennis courts

* $8 million for transportation improvements

* $5.4 million for reforms of the beleaguered sheriff's department and to hire additional deputies

The mayor said the plan "will create opportunity in every neighborhood and allow the city to meet the demands of a booming population" that has increased by 100,000 since 2000 and upward of 15,000 each year.

Hancock said his budget will "allow us to grow smart and meet the changing needs of a city that is transforming right before our very eyes, while also ensuring we protect neighborhoods, improve public safety and shape Denver into City of Opportunity for everyone."
